10 Reasons to Donate Blood This Summer
During the summer, fewer blood donors are available due to holidays and possible heatwaves. That is exactly why every donor is especially important! Patients need blood products all year round, including during the holiday season. Here are ten good reasons to donate blood this summer.
1. Blood donors are especially needed in summer
During the summer holiday season, the number of donors decreases, but the need for blood remains the same. Some donors are temporarily unable to donate because of travel-related deferral periods. Blood products are perishable: platelets can be stored for about one week and red blood cells for about five weeks, which means supplies cannot be stockpiled far in advance.
2. You can help save a life
One blood donation can help up to three patients. A single donation can be separated into several blood products – red blood cells, platelets and plasma. These products are used for cancer patients, during surgeries and for people injured in accidents.
3. Blood cannot be manufactured
Artificial blood suitable for patient care has not yet been developed. Every blood product comes from voluntary donors. Thank you to every blood donor!
4. Donating blood is quick – even on holiday
The actual blood donation takes about ten minutes. A complete visit to a donation centre usually takes around one hour. It fits easily into a shopping trip or a summer outing. You can donate blood regardless of where you are staying – even while spending time at your summer cottage.
5. Donor health is carefully monitored
The safety of blood donation is ensured through measures such as a health questionnaire and donor interview before every donation. Haemoglobin levels are always checked before donating. Blood Service also provides iron supplements to groups at risk of iron deficiency (all women under 50 years of age and all donors who donate every four months or more frequently).
6. Donating blood is safe
Blood donation safety is monitored carefully. Approximately 450 millilitres of blood are collected during a donation. For a healthy adult, this amount is safe, and the body replaces the lost fluid within about 24 hours.
7. After your donation: a cold Luovutusvichy
The summer favourite is back! Luovutusvichy is available for a limited time at all blood donation locations, including the Blood Donation Bus. Snacks are also available after donation.
8. Anyone may need blood
A blood transfusion may be needed unexpectedly due to an accident or illness. By donating blood, we help ensure that lifesaving treatment is available to everyone.
9. Donating blood is good for your wellbeing
Research shows that helping others increases wellbeing and life satisfaction. Make a positive difference this summer and enjoy the good feeling that comes with helping others.
10. Make summer 2026 the summer you started donating
Have you been thinking about donating blood for the first time? Finland needs 22,000 new blood donors this year, because only 3% of people eligible to donate actually do so. New donors are important because some existing donors must stop donating due to illness or age. Take a quick test can you donate and book your appointment today!
