The use of blood products does not decrease during summer – up to 800 blood products may be needed in a single weekend

Summer holidays and heat reduce blood donation, but the need for blood products in hospitals remains unchanged. During one weekend, the Blood Service supplies hospitals with up to 500–600 units of red cells and 150–200 units of platelets. At the moment, there is a particular shortage of donors with negative blood groups, who are now being actively invited.

Blood products are perishable and have a limited shelf life.

“Platelets, which are vital for cancer patients, can only be stored for one week after donation. This means that stocks cannot be built up far in advance – fresh blood is needed continuously,” says Johanna Castrén, Director of Blood Donation at the Blood Service.

It’s worth donating blood even during the holidays

During the summer, the number of donors typically decreases slightly. Therefore, the Blood Service encourages everyone who is eligible to donate to do so also during the holiday season. Blood donation is a concrete and easy way to help others.

“Every weekday, including during the summer holidays, around 600–700 voluntary donors are needed to ensure enough blood products for all patients,” says Castrén.

“However, it’s important to remember that even if you cannot donate right now, speaking in support of blood donation is also valuable. Anyone can encourage their friends, family members or colleagues to donate blood,” Castrén reminds.

How to prepare for blood donation

  1. Check your eligibility
You can donate blood between the ages of 18 and 70; first-time donation is possible up to age 65. Travel abroad may cause a temporary deferral.
  2. Book an appointment or walk in
Find locations and book at veripalvelu.fi/book an appointment. Walk-ins are possible if there are available slots.
  3. Complete the health questionnaire
To be completed each time, on the day of donation or at most one day before.
  4. Bring valid ID
A valid identity document is required (passport, ID card or driving licence).
  5. Stay hydrated
    Especially important in summer heat.
  6. Take it easy
Avoid heavy exercise and sauna after donation.
