For members of the stem cell registry

We are grateful to every member who has joined the Stem Cell Registry. You make it possible for as many patients as possible to find a suitable donor!

You are a member of the Stem Cell Registry if you have signed up and returned your saliva sample to us. Registering the samples may take a few months. If you have provided us with your email address, you will receive a message when your sample has been registered.
We will contact you if your tissue type matches a patient waiting for a stem cell transplant. At that point, we will invite you for further tests. You can still decline at this stage if your health or life situation has changed. You can remain a member of the Stem Cell Registry until you turn 56. We will automatically remove your information from the registry at that time.

When and who can donate?

Every year, 30–60 members of the Stem Cell Registry donate stem cells. A suitable donor is selected based on tissue compatibility.

This means that only a small proportion (about 2%) of registry members ever get to donate. Sometimes the call comes only after several years of being registered.

However, it is crucial that the registry has a large number of members so that as many patients as possible can find a suitable donor.

If potential stem cell donors are found in the registry for a patient, we will contact them personally and invite them for more detailed tests. The best “match” is chosen. Sometimes there is only one possible lifesaver for a patient in the entire worldwide registry.

What else can you do to help stem cell transplant patients?

While you wait for a possible call to donate stem cells, you can help by donating blood, for example. Every patient who needs a stem cell transplant also requires other blood products during their treatment.

Until what age can you belong to the Stem Cell Registry?

You can remain a member of the Stem Cell Registry until you turn 56. However, it is rare for someone over 40 to be selected as a stem cell donor.
We do not notify members separately when they are removed from the registry due to the upper age limit.
