Transfusion patient research
FRCBS studies transfusion receiving patients through the electronic health care records of Helsinki University Hospital (HUS). HUS records provide us world class access to data on blood usage. So far, we have studied to whom, when and where blood is given (Turkulainen & al 2025) and developed data driven subgrouping of transfusion receiving patients (Peltola & al. 2025). Studies on predicting the need of blood transfusion, bleeding during operations and hemoglobin incrementation (i.e. how much a red cell bag increases patient hemoglobin) are on their way.
Fifteen most frequent International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) categories associated with transfusions. Ranking was computed from 99.67% of the dataset, and the figure represents 65.65% of the dataset. RBC, red blood cell.
