Serum eye drops
The Blood Service is to start producing serum eye drops for the treatment of severe ocular surface conditions. The eye drops will be produced from serum derived from donated blood.
Serum eye drops are an internationally known form of treatment for severe ocular surface conditions, such as severe dry eye disease. Serum contains nutrients, vitamins, growth factors and anti-inflammatory factors on which the treatment effect is based.
The serum eye drops will be produced by the Blood Service’s Advanced Cell Therapy Centre in Vantaa by combining serum from eight different donors. The combined serum will be diluted with isotonic saline and dosed into eye drop pipettes (single-dose containers). HUS will be responsible for distributing the product to patients.
